Volunteer With Us

We have a pool of around 50 volunteers who undertake a variety of roles on a rota basis. These include cooks, kitchen assistants, befrienders, people with IT skills, and people with relevant experience to help run groups.

At the moment we’re looking for kitchen volunteers for our Monday breakfast session, and non-kitchen volunteers (‘Befrienders’) to support guests at our drop-ins on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and for some of our groups.

Volunteers benefit from regular training in a wide range of subjects – recent training has included mental health awareness, an overview of drug & alcohol abuse, autism, First Aid, modern slavery and self-defence.

If you’re interested in volunteering for Doorway drop-in sessions (including cooking roles) please download, complete and return this form. We ask for two referees which should be people the applicant has known for over two years in any capacity (just not relations or partners). Email addresses for these are really helpful if possible.

We ask for all our volunteers to undertake an induction process and we will organise enhanced DBS checks for those who intend to work with our guests.

Please contact Amy (01249 445385 / ) for more info.

We are also forming a group of volunteers to help raise awareness and funds for Doorway in the community – ‘Doorway Does’ – see our Fundraise With Us page for more info. This is an option for those who cannot volunteer during weekdays, but can organise or support ad hoc events at weekends or in the evenings.

Volunteering at Christmas

Whilst we are grateful for the increase in awareness and the extra donations that are generated during the winter months and the run-up to Christmas, unfortunately it is not possible to volunteer at Doorway only for the Christmas period. Sadly homelessness is a year-round problem and therefore we ensure that our volunteers are prepared to make a longer term commitment to volunteering.

“I can truly say however I feel when going to Doorway I always feel 100% better when leaving. It really puts things into perspective and gives you a kick up the butt. I enjoy my time at Doorway as it makes me feel valued.”
